We purchase and breed our cattle here at Grassy Run based on what we like to refer to as the 3-P's. Pedigree, Pheno-type, and Performance.

Pedigree - We believe that the family makes the animal, particularly the maternal side. If you want to take the guesswork out of what type of calves are going to hit the ground you need to use animals from proven cow families. In other words, genetics that have proven themselves year after year, will provide you with consistent results.

Pheno-type - When we decided to get into the Hereford business we wanted to breed cattle that would be competitive in the show ring. To that end we have selected and bred cattle that are square hipped, deep bodied, and have all around eye appeal.
 
Performance - The bottom line is that no matter how good the cattle look, or what their genetic back round, if the cattle do not perform, it will be difficult to be  profitable. If you look at the EPD's behind our cattle, you will find that they are consistently well  above the breed average in WW, YW, MM, and MG, while still maintaining a moderate and acceptable birth weight.
